Joel Mathews

Joel Mathews, PhD, is an accomplished researcher in the fields of biomarker discovery and assay development, currently serving as the Director of Biomarker Assay Research at Ionis Pharmaceuticals, Inc., since August 2018. In this role, Joel Mathews established the Biomarker group and has led the discovery and validation of biomarkers for various diseases, including neurology, cardiology, renal, metabolic, and pulmonary conditions. Prior to joining Ionis, Joel Mathews held key positions at Genentech, where responsibilities included leading biomarker development for multiple immunology programs, and served as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, focusing on the impact of obesity on respiratory immune responses. Educationally, Joel Mathews earned a Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Bachelor's Degree in Molecular Biology and Microbiology from Brigham Young University.
