Rui Sousa has a diverse work experience spanning over several decades. Rui started their career in 1997 as an Ambulance Nurse at INEM, where they provided critical care to both adult and pediatric patients in pre-hospital environments. Rui also served as a Senior Staff Nurse in the Ambulance Dispatch Center, where they made triage decisions and provided support to ambulance crews in the field. Rui Sousa also worked as an Advanced and Immediate Life Support Instructor during their time at INEM.
In 1995, Rui Sousa joined Centro Hospitalar de Setúbal as a Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department. In this role, they delivered high standards of emergency care, including triage, resuscitation, and management of high dependence patients. Rui also acted as a leader and provided supervision to staff, including junior doctors. Additionally, Rui Sousa served as a link between the department and the Ambulance Dispatch Center, as well as the Fire and Police departments.
From 2001 to 2004, Rui Sousa worked as the Executive Director at ISJD - Sede. In 2005, they transitioned to the American Heart Association | American Stroke Association and served as an Instructor for Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support until 2014.
Rui Sousa joined the United Nations in 2011 as an Emergency Nurse, providing emergency nursing care and health services to the Portuguese Police and the local population in East Timor. Rui also delivered Basic Life Support training to the East Timor ambulance, police, and fire departments.
From 2014 to 2018, Rui Sousa worked at the Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust as a Charge Nurse in the Emergency Department. Their responsibilities included providing care in various areas of the department and offering clinical expertise and leadership to their team.
In 2018, Rui Sousa joined The Joint Civil Aid Corps as the Deputy Chief Officer. Currently, they are employed at Iqarus as a Project Manager, starting in May 2021.
Rui Sousa completed a Bachelor of nursery degree in Registered Nursing/Registered Nurse from the Escola Superior de Enfermagem Franciscanas Missionárias de Maria, which they attended from 1992 to 1995. Rui then pursued further education and earned a Licentiate degree in Registered Nursing/Registered Nurse from the Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal in 2004. Subsequently, Rui Sousa attended the Universidade do Porto from 2005 to 2010, where they obtained a Master of Disaster Medicine degree in Registered Nursing/Registered Nurse. Rui further enhanced their qualifications by completing a Pos-graduation program in Critical Care Nursing at the Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal, which they attended from 2010 to 2011.
