Tony Nelson's work experience includes various leadership positions in the healthcare sector and the provincial government. Tony currently holds the role of Executive Director, Indigenous Health & Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Island Health - Vancouver Island Health Authority. Prior to this, they served as Acting Vice President at the same organization. In the BC Provincial Government, they worked as the Executive Director, Indigenous Community Recovery and Director, Indigenous Partnerships and Wellness. Tony also worked as the Manager, Indigenous Relations and Community Engagement at Island Health. Before joining the government, Tony held the position of Director, Targeted Learner Supports Programs at the BC Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Training. Tony also served as Director, Tuition Waiver Program & System Navigator at the BC Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills and Training. Tony started their career as an Admissions & Recruitment Officer at Camosun College and later worked as an Indigenous Investigations Liaison Officer/Investigations Analyst at the Office of the Representative for Children and Youth. Tony began their professional journey as a Researcher at Big Hair Productions.
Tony Nelson has a Bachelor's Degree in Criminology with a focus on Political Science and Government from Simon Fraser University, which they obtained from 1999 to 2002. Tony also has a Certificate in International Relations specifically in EU Integration and Enlargement from the Schloss Hofen Summer Institute Academy in 2000. Additionally, they have a Diploma in Criminal Justice from Camosun College, which they earned from 1997 to 1999. Tony Nelson completed their high school education at Mount Douglas Senior Secondary from 1985 to 1987. Tony furthered their education by obtaining a Certificate in Conflict Resolution: Mediation/Third Party Intervention from the Justice Institute of British Columbia in 2012. Tony Nelson also holds additional certifications, including the San'yas Indigenous Cultural Safety Online Training Program from the Provincial Health Services Authority in 2016, American Sign Language Level 1 from Camosun College in 2000, and various certifications related to collective bargaining, management, and labor arbitration.
