Prof. Dr. Erkan Ibiş was born March 30, 1958, in Trabzon and completed his pre- university education there. He qraduated from at Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 1982, Prof. Dr. Erkan Ibiş began his academic career in 1985 as a research assistant at Ankara University Faculty of Medicine’s Department of Nuclear Medicine. He received the titles "Associate Professor" in 1991 and "Professor" in 1997 from Ankara University Faculty of Medicine’s Nuclear Medicine Department.
Between 1994 and 2005, he worked as the deputy chief physician at Ankara University Faculty of Medicine’s Cebeci Hospital; thereafter he became the hospital’s chief physician and the department head of Ankara University Faculty of Medicine’s Radiation Oncology Department and the department head of its Nuclear Medicine Department; and as the Vice Rector. In the final stage, he worked as an elected Rector of Ankara University from 2012 to 2020.
Prof. Dr. Erkan İbiş has attended many international conferences, workshops, congresses, courses, academic cooperation and international rectors’ meetings throughout his career. In 1987, he participated in two months of “Protection from Radiation" training in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Kiev given by the former Soviet Union’s International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Prof. Dr. Erkan İbiş worked as a researcher in Nuclear Medicine and Medical Physics at the University of WisconsinMilwaukee between 1990-1991. He has published over 50 SCI/SCI expanded journal articles He is ranked 12th in the ISI Web of SCI H index.
Prof. Dr. Erkan İbiş has also earned many certifications and national awards. He earned a lifetime nonrefundable scientist scholarship from TUBITAK throughout his undergraduate education between 1975-1982. He has received many awards, some of which are as follows; Behçet's Disease Research Award from TUBITAK; an "Honorary Citizenship" Certificate from Kızılcahamam Municipality; a “Friend to Civil Society" Certificate from Ankara’s Non-Governmental Organizations Platform; an "Honorary Citizenship" Certificate from Beypazarı Municipality; a "Those Giving Value to Ankara" Award from Ankara’s Journalists and Writers Association; and the “Civil Society Volunteer” Certificate from Ankara’s Non-Governmental Organizations Platform. In recognition of his career achievements Prof. Dr. Erkan İbiş has been awarded the "Order of the State of Romania (Award of Merit)" by the Romanian State, the "Order of the State of Italy (Commendatore)" by the president of Italy, and the "Order of the State of Hungary (Magyar Erdemrend Tisztikeresztje)" by the president of Hungary.
Prof. Dr. Erkan İbiş has served as the advisor to the President of the Council of Higher Education (CoHE). He has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Inter-University Board (IUB);a member of the board of the Turkish Atomic Energy Authority; a member of the Advisory Board of the Turkish Atomic Energy Agency; a member of the Board of Directors of the University Sports Federation; the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Ankara University College; a member of the Board of Directors of the Ankara University Association; a member and the Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Turkish American Association (TAD, TAA); a member of the Board of Directors of the Turkish Nuclear Medicine Association; a member of the Ankara City Council;a member of the Capital Ankara Platform; the Co-chairman of the University Business World Cooperation Platform (UNIDIP); the Co-chairman of the University Hospitals Association of Turkey; the Co-chairman of the Turkish-Russian Societal Forum Education Science Committee; and the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Ankara University Development Foundation. Prof. Dr. Erkan İbiş remains a member of the Ethics Committee for Public Officials and the Ministry of Health’s Medical Specialization Board (TUK). Prof. Dr. Erkan İbiş has worked as an editor of the TUBITAK Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences and Ankara University’s Journal of Nuclear Sciences. He has served as a member of the Editorial Board of TUBITAK Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences, a member of the Editorial Board of the Turkish Clinics Medical Sciences, a member of the Editorial Board of Molecular Imaging and Radionuclide Therapy, and a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Higher Education and Science. Appointed as the Rector of Istinye University by proxy on January 10, 2022, Prof. Dr. Erkan Ibiş was appointed as the Rector with the Presidency's decision dated 22 July 2022 and numbered 339. prof. Dr. Erkan İbiş is married and has two children.
