Tom Wauters is a highly experienced professional in the field of plasma and fusion energy physics, currently serving as a Scientific Officer for Plasma-Wall Interactions at ITER Organization since September 2021. Concurrently, Tom holds a position as an Energy Researcher at the Laboratory for Plasma Physics - ERM/KMS, specializing in the design and operation of high power ICRF antennas for fusion energy plasmas. Tom has previously been an EFDA Fusion Research Fellow and earned a PhD in Engineering Physics from CEA, where international experience includes working in both France and Germany. Tom's earlier roles include a Group Leader position at Scouts en Gidsen Vlaanderen and a Medical Physicist at AZ-VUB, focusing on radiotherapy research. ITER is an international, large-scale scientific collaboration intended to prove the viability of fusion as an energy source, and to collect data that will contribute substantially toward the design and operation of the subsequent first electricity-producing fusion power plants. To achieve this goal, seven Members (China, European Union, India, Japan, South Korea, Russia and the United States) have joined forces to build the ITER Tokamak: the world’s largest fusion device. The seven Members signed the ITER Agreement in 2006, and have agreed to share in every aspect of the project: science, engineering, procurement, financing, staffing, intellectual property, etc. The ITER Project is based in Saint-Paul Lez Durance, in the south of France, where the ITER facility is currently under construction.
