Ariel Brumbaugh, PhD, has a diverse work experience in the scientific field. They currently hold the position of Director of Corporate Liaison and Ventures at Gladstone Institutes, where they facilitate strategic relationships and alliances across various research areas. Ariel is involved in sourcing and assessing translational programs with the potential to spinout into startup ventures, as well as developing and executing partnerships with scientific investigators, investors, and biotech and pharmaceutical partners.
Prior to their current role, Ariel worked at Federation Bio as a Consultant in Microbiome Therapeutics and also served as a Scientist and Research Team Lead in R&D and Tech Ops. At Federation Bio, they played a key role in defining the company's vision, securing venture capital, and translating basic science into an industry setting. They led the Enteric Hyperoxaluria Program from discovery to early development, and were involved in various aspects such as hiring talent, developing a research strategy, building research operations, securing intellectual property, establishing a regulatory plan, and fundraising.
Ariel has also held positions at Stanford University and the University of California, San Francisco as a Visiting Scholar and Postdoctoral Research Fellow, respectively, working on the chemistry of the microbiome and defined consortia design under the supervision of Michael A. Fischbach, Ph.D.
Their earlier experiences include being a Doctoral Student at the University of Michigan, where they researched E. coli UTI pathogenesis and vaccine immunology, and served as a Laboratory Manager for Vibrio cholerae Pathogenesis. They have also worked as a Research Technician at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, participated in a Trans-Atlantic Science Student Exchange program at Universidad Complutense de Madrid, and interned as a Research in Science and Engineering (RISE) student at UC Santa Barbara.
Ariel's career in research began at the University of Washington, where they worked as an Undergraduate Research Assistant, focusing on organic synthesis for non-linear optical materials.
Ariel Brumbaugh, PhD, has an education history that includes a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Biochemistry from the University of Washington (2001-2006). They went on to earn a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Michigan (2009-2014). Following that, they were a Postdoctoral Associate at the University of California, San Francisco in the Department of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences (2015-2017). Finally, they completed a Postdoctoral Associate program in Bioengineering at Stanford University (2017-2019).
