Position Overview:  

The Northern Virginia Community Outreach Director is a key member of the Impact team, dedicated to strengthening and helping to shape the future of Jewish communal life in Northern Virginia, one of the fastest-growing Jewish communities in America.  This position is designed to enhance Federation’s presence and impact in Northern Virginia by fostering meaningful partnerships with and between community members, local and national Jewish agencies, Federation donors, congregational rabbis, and key communal leadership.

As part of Federation’s model for building and sustaining a vibrant Jewish community, the Impact Department functions at the intersection of Federation’s community engagement, strategic planning and philanthropic grant-making, and vibrant Jewish life programming. The Impact team’s outputs are founded upon data-driven solutions designed to strengthen Jewish life in Greater Washington (DC, Maryland, Northern Virginia) and a flourishing society in Israel & Overseas.  

Primary Responsibilities 

  • In partnership with senior staff, develop a long-term strategy to bolster Northern Virginia’s Jewish community and institutions

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with a wide variety of teams across Federation, including Resource Development, Communications, Leadership, and others, to implement Federation’s NoVA strategy

  • Build expertise as it pertains to Northern Virginia’s Jewish communal goals, trends, opportunities, challenges, and calculated risks

  • Build relationships with key NoVA lay leaders, synthesizing learnings to inform the greater NoVA strategy

  • Strengthen the partnership with Federation and represent Federation with local agencies and community organizations

  • Strengthen rabbinic and synagogue engagement in NoVA in alignment with Federation’s Synagogue Strategy

  • Mobilize and convene Northern Virginia professionals to foster connection and collaboration

  • Represent Federation at NoVA community events with local agencies and community organizations

  • Facilitate and manage collaborative grass roots community efforts throughout Northern Virginia

  • Steward committees and task forces relative to the evolving NoVA strategy

  • Develop internal progress reports around key performance indicators, benchmarks, and community engagement model

Skills and Experience 

  • Northern Virginia residency strongly preferred

  • Minimum 7-10 years of program leadership experience in either customer service, relationship management, fundraising/donor cultivation, community organizing, or engagement

  • Strong, demonstrated interpersonal skills that enable relationship and partnership building with community organizations, lay leaders, and professionals at all levels

  • Demonstrated critical thinking and problem-solving skills

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written

  • Proven success in managing presentations and facilitation of internal and external stakeholders

  • Proven ability to work collaboratively and effectively with team members at all levels

  • Ability to work proactively and independently, perform well under pressure, meet deadlines, and balance multiple requests at once

  • Comfortable with and open to learning new technologies

  • Advanced skills in in Microsoft Suite, particularly Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint and customer relationship management (CRM) platforms

  • Knowledge of the Jewish community, its customs, and practices preferred

Candidates should be located in or willing to relocate to the Greater Washington (DC, MD, and Northern VA) region. This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement, with 3 days a week required meeting with organizations, lay leaders, and professionals in Northern Virginia or in our headquarters.
