JFCS Immigration Legal Services

Immigrants come to Pittsburgh from all over the world, seeking a better life for their families and/or fleeing persecution and violence. However, navigating the complexities of immigration laws carries tremendous uncertainty, challenges, and expense. As a JFCS employee, you can help provide trustworthy information and support to immigrants.

The team at JFCS provides pro-bono legal services to immigrants to successfully navigate our complicated immigration system and reach their immigration goals, which is usually to become US citizens. JFCS Immigration Legal Services works holistically with all other departments in the agency to ensure that people who are struggling get the range of assistance they need.

Position Description:

Provides information to individuals who are seeking help by completing intakes, making referrals to other service providers and by working closely with legal staff to help foreign born clients receive the information needed to reach their immigration goals.

Qualifications:

Bilingual in Spanish required. Excellent organizational, written and communication skills required. Two years’ experience working with immigrants or in the legal field is preferred. Applicants should be customer service oriented with a pleasant demeanor. The ability to manage multiple tasks at one time while maintaining composure and a sense of humor is absolutely necessary.

Duties and Responsibilities:

· Answer telephone and respond to email or website inquiries from potential clients.

· Work closely with legal staff members to obtain answers to client questions and relay information back to the clients.

· Work with staff members to schedule initial client appointments.

· Assist clients through checklists and templates to prepare for initial appointments with staff.

· Make referrals to other service providers as appropriate.

· Work with intake coordinators from other JFCS departments to ensure continuity of services for clients.

· Process incoming mail and assist with outgoing mail, as necessary.

· Participate in staff development and training opportunities provided by JFCS to promote professional growth and development and stay abreast of best practices.

· Be inclusive and welcoming when dealing with potential and existing clients and behave in a culturally sensitive manner to respond appropriately to the cultural characteristics of clients.

· Enter and submit timesheets in a timely manner (weekly).

· Attend all Immigration department meetings and other meetings as required.

· Assume other responsibilities as assigned.
