Brandon Russell has a diverse work experience that spans various industries and roles. Brandon started their career as a Paramedic at Butler County Emergency Medical Services in 2001, eventually moving up to the role of Quality & Education Manager and then Deputy Director/Director of Operations. In 2009, they joined Cowley College as an Adjunct Faculty member. In 2013, they became an Adjunct Faculty & Guest Lecturer at Wichita State University. Finally, in 2014, they took on the role of Chief Operating Officer at Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters, where they focused on fostering a culture of success and supporting employees in program delivery excellence.

Brandon Russell holds a Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree in Public Administration and Nonprofit Management from Wichita State University, which they completed from 2007 to 2010. Brandon also earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Psychology from Bethel College-North Newton between 1993 and 1998. In addition, they obtained an Associate's degree in Mobile Intensive Care (Paramedic) from Cowley College in 2000, following their EMT education at Dodge City Community College in 1992 and 1993. Furthermore, Brandon has obtained several certifications, including "Senior Professional in Human Resources® (SPHR®) Certification" from HRCI in May 2021, and "Six Sigma Lean/DFSS Green Belt" from Aveta Business Institute in 2016. Brandon also gained expertise in the "Driving Nonprofit Performance & Innovation" program from Harvard Business School (obtained in 2022) and became a certified "Process Communication Model (PCM) Trainer" from Kahler Communications, Inc. in 2019.
