Gregory started their career at GTE Laboratories, where they worked as a Principal MTS. Gregory initiated and led the first-ever project on Knowledge Discovery in Databases. During their tenure, they developed advanced data mining and knowledge discovery systems, including churn analysis and health care data analysis.

Gregory Piatetsky-Shapiro pursued their education in computer science at New York University. Gregory obtained a Master of Science degree from the university, which they pursued between 1977 and 1979. Following this, they went on to complete their Ph.D. in Computer Science at New York University, studying from 1979 to 1984.
