Katariina Koikkalainen

Head of Sustainability at Kingsrose Mining Ltd

Dr Katariina Koikkalainen is a sustainability professional with over 10 years of experience in the development of environmental and sustainability performance in the mining industry. Prior to joining Kingsrose she was Sustainability Manager at leading consultancy Rambol, where she has worked with the largest mining projects in Finland, including the Terrafame nickel mine, Boliden’s Kevitsa nickel-copper mine, Agnico Eagle’s Kittilä mine and Anglo American’s world-class Sakatti nickel-copper-PGE deposit. She has extensive experience in operational environmental risk analyses and risk management at different stages of the mining life cycle, including ESIA and permitting projects as well as classification of mining waste and development of mining waste management plans. She has also conducted traceability and responsibility reviews of the critical raw materials for the electric car battery value chain and developed a tool for evaluation of country-specific environmental and social risks for mining projects. Dr Koikkalainen holds an honours degree in Tropical Environmental science and a PhD in Plant & Soil science from the University of Aberdeen. During her academic career prior to consulting, she was awarded a Planetary Biology scholarship by NASA, and worked in a joint research project between Finnish Geological Institute, Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare and University of Eastern Finland, where the aim was to develop tools for environmental and health risk assessment for metals mines.
