Sean Meagher

Sean Meagher is currently the Associate Director, Commercial at Kirby Group Engineering. Prior to that, they worked for eight years as the Project Manager for the Grid West Transmission Project at EirGrid.

The Grid West project was estimated at €240m and was meant to connect 647MW of renewable energy in the West of Ireland to a strong point on the Irish grid. The original concept was a 400kV, High Voltage Alternating Current (HVAC), single circuit transmission line.

By 2014, the public appetite for private onshore wind development and grid infrastructure was such that the then Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources requested a comprehensive, route specific report of fully undergrounded and overhead options for each of the main grid transmission projects currently in progress. This report was to allow underground and overhead options to be compared against each other, and in particular to be assessed and analysed in respect of their technical, economic and environmental characteristics.

The Independent Expert Panel (the Panel) was appointed by the Minister and chaired by Mrs Justice Catherine McGuinness. As Grid West was the most advanced of all the EirGrid transmission projects, Sean was responsible for developing this essential national infrastructure report in line with the terms of reference set out by the Panel.

When the Panel completed its analysis of the Report they were unanimously of the opinion that the report was complete, objective and in full accordance with the terms of reference for the report set by the Panel.

Sean Meagher is a Master of Engineering Management from University College Dublin, a B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from Trinity College Dublin, and a Dip.E.E. in Technician Engineering Diploma from Technological University Dublin. Sean is also certified in Fellow and Ceng FIET from Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and in Fellow and CEng FIEI from Engineers Ireland.
