Marco De Mattia

Staff Data Scientist at KoBold Metals

Marco is a physicist and data scientist who spent most of his career working on the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. He helped discover the Higgs boson, analyzed terabytes of data in search of physics beyond the Standard Model, and coordinated alignment and calibration for the detector. His transition to the industry involved developing high-performance C++ software for a prestigious high-frequency trading firm for about a year. He then became a data scientist in the upstream oil and gas industry, where he spent about 3.5 years developing models to help maximize production in unconventional wells. He is very excited to start playing an active role in the energy revolution.

Marco received a master’s in physics at the University of Rome “La Sapienza” with a thesis in general relativity. He then obtained his Ph.D. in physics at the University of Padua, where he developed a search for rare Higgs boson production in association with top quarks.
