Derek Phillips

Head Of Perception Engineering at Kodiak

Derek Phillips has worked in a variety of roles since 2014. In 2014, they were an Undergraduate Researcher at the Space Environment and Satellite Systems Laboratory at Stanford University, where they were responsible for designing communications link for a CubeSat that will travel to Jupiter's moon, Europa. In 2015, they were an Intern at The MITRE Corporation, where they detected anomalous foreign language xml files utilizing limited natural language processing in Python and assisted in the set-up of 3 resource-heavy VMs on a company-wide "cloud". In 2016, they were an Undergraduate Researcher at Stanford Intelligent Systems Laboratory, where they implemented Long Short Term Memory Recurrent neural networks (LSTM) using TensorFlow to improve driver intention prediction. In 2017, they were a Software Engineering Intern at Facebook, where they implemented a feature for candidate recommendation system to expose model reasoning to system users. In 2018, they were an Autonomous Vehicle Software Engineering Intern at Lyft Level 5, where they worked on the perception team and developed, improved, and adapted advanced deep learning object detection networks to run in real-time. That same year, they were also a Graduate Research Assistant at Stanford Intelligent Systems Laboratory, where they worked on risk characterization of human drivers. Since 2019, they have been a Senior Software Engineer at Kodiak Robotics, where they have led projects for both learned and classical perception algorithms for object/obstacle detection and early/late sensor fusion on critical path for self-driving truck product.

Derek Phillips attended Stanford University from 2014 to 2018, where they earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. Derek then continued their education at Stanford University, graduating in 2019 with a Master of Science in Computer Science.
