George E. Nasr

Dr. George E. Nasr was appointed Provost of the Lebanese American University in September 2018.

As the chief academic officer of LAU, the Provost is a member of the President’s Cabinet and chairs the Council of Deans, which supervises all academic activities of the university. He oversees a wide array of academic program planning, teaching and research-related affairs across LAU’s seven schools. The Provost is also at the center of the academic strategic-planning process, long-term institutional positioning, and global partnerships.

Prior to taking the role of Provost, Dr. Nasr served as Professor of Electrical Engineering and Dean of LAU’s School of Engineering (SOE) from October 2006 to September 2018.

Dr. Nasr earned his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering in 1988 from the University of Kentucky at Lexington, where he became assistant professor shortly thereafter. After a time at Valdosta State University in the US state of Georgia, he joined LAU in 1993.

Dr. Nasr convened a university-wide committee whose work led to the formalization of the School of Engineering and Architecture in 1995. That same year, he was appointed Chair of the newly established Department of Electrical, Computer and Industrial Engineering, a position he held until October 2005, when he assumed the position of Acting Dean of the school. In October 2006, Dr. Nasr was appointed Dean of the School of Engineering and Architecture, which became the School of Engineering in 2009.

During his tenure as Dean, Dr. Nasr was able to successfully advance the school at the academic, administrative, strategic, assessment and accreditation levels. He spearheaded efforts to obtain the first accreditation of the school’s undergraduate programs by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) in 2011 and its renewal in 2017. He directed the school’s first and second comprehensive strategic planning processes, which helped the SOE meet the highest academic standards and greatly enhance its reputation in the academic world. He has also been a major contributor to the overall institutional development of LAU and in particular its NEASC accreditation.

Dr. Nasr authored numerous publications in refereed international journals and conference proceedings. His research interests include mathematical modeling and optimization, neural networks, energy modeling and forecasting, and engineering education. He was instrumental in forming the multidisciplinary energy research group at LAU, which has pioneered research on energy modeling and forecasting in Lebanon. His involvement in scholarly activities also includes active participation in organizational and technical committees of several international conferences and professional meetings.

Dr. Nasr continues to be very active in the professional education circles and serves as a member of the Council of Higher Education of Lebanon and as an ABET Program Evaluator. He served a three-year term as a member of the Executive Committee of the Global Engineering Deans Council (GEDC, 2013-2016), a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and a member of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), Eta Kappa Nu, Sigma Pi Sigma, Tau Beta Pi, and the Order of Engineers in Lebanon.
