The Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT) GmbH aims to provide a scientific basis for the protection and sustainable use of tropical coastal ecosystems. Its activities are focused on three main areas:

1) Research: In close cooperation with partners in the tropics, ZMT leads interdisciplinary projects concerning the structure and functioning of tropical coastal ecosystems such as coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass beds, upwelling areas and river estuaries. These habitats are among the most productive on the planet and of great economic and ecological importance. Consequently, their response to human impact and natural changes are of great interest. 

2) Capacity development: ZMT is involved in the education of students and young scientists from all over the world in the field of tropical marine ecology and in the tropics ZMT supports capacity development in the area of research.

3) Consulting: ZMT is a national and international focal point for research, educational and government institutions for the exchange of expert knowledge in the field of tropical marine ecology.

The Scientific and Research Team at the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT) GmbH conducts interdisciplinary studies on the structure and functioning of tropical coastal ecosystems, such as coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrass beds.
