In 1997, Dr. Kleyn obtained their attorney qualification from the Law Society of South Africa. Their focus then shifted towards tax law, leading their to pursue a Master of Laws (LLM) degree at the University of Johannesburg from 2000 to 2003.

To enhance their business acumen, Dr. Kleyn completed two management courses at the GIBS Business School. In 2001, they completed a Business Leadership course, and in 2003, they undertook a Business Management course.

Dr. Kleyn's academic journey continued with a certificate course in Passport to China at Stellenbosch University in 2008. During the same year, they enrolled in a PhD program at the University of Cape Town, specializing in Private Law - Intellectual Property. Dr. Madelein completed their doctoral degree in 2010.

In addition to their formal education, Dr. Kleyn holds various certifications. Dr. Madelein obtained the Registered Patent Attorney qualification from the South African Institute of Intellectual Property Law (SAIIPL) in April 2002.
