Maria Alvarellos has worked in various roles in the science field since 2011. Maria began their career as a Graduate Student Instructor at the University of Michigan. Maria then moved to the Lawrence Hall of Science as an Assistant Curriculum Specialist in 2012. In 2013, they became a Contributor for The Berkeley Science Review, where they pitched and wrote the feature story for the November 2013 issue. Maria also worked as a Freelance Contributor for Treasure Bay Books in 2013. In 2014, Maria became a Scientific Curator at Stanford University. From 2018 to 2021, they worked as a Medical Writer at CDM Barcelona and McCann Health. Currently, Maria is a Scientific Content Creator at Lifebit.

Maria Alvarellos obtained a Master of Science in Human Genetics from the University of Michigan between 2009 and 2011. From 2004 to 2008, they received a Bachelor of Science in Conservation and Organismal Biology and a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from San Jose State University. Additionally, Maria has obtained certifications in Introduction to R from DataCamp in February 2017, Intro to Python for Data Science from DataCamp, and Introduction to Genomic Technologies from Coursera.
