Derek Aoki

Senior Nighttime Tagging Technician at Loggerhead Marinelife Center

Derek Aoki has extensive experience in marine biology, particularly in sea turtle research and conservation. Currently serving as a Senior Nighttime Tagging Technician at Loggerhead Marinelife Center since April 2018, Derek conducts surveys, tags turtles, collects blood samples, and manages data using GPS and Microsoft Access. Previous roles include Environmental Specialist at Inwater Research Group, Inc. and Data Collection Supervisor at TURTLE FOUNDATION, where Derek structured databases, trained staff, and analyzed nesting data using ArcGIS and R. Educationally, Derek is pursuing a PhD in Integrative Biology at Florida Atlantic University, holding a Master's degree in Environmental Science from the University of Freiburg and a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science and Geography from the University of Denver.
