Sean MacKinnon

Chief Scientist at Loop Energy

Sean MacKinnon has extensive work experience in the field of fuel cell research and development. Sean started their career at Ballard Power Systems in 2001, where they served as a Senior Research Scientist. In this role, they provided technical direction for PEMFC research, led innovation and design activities for novel components and processes, and drafted and managed research projects.

In 2006, MacKinnon joined General Motors - Fuel Cell Research Lab as a Senior Research Scientist. Here, they focused on the development of hydrocarbon proton exchange membranes for automotive fuel cells, managed collaborative membrane development programs, evaluated supplier fuel cell membranes, and served as a consultant for next-generation technologies.

In 2009, MacKinnon became a Research Officer at the National Research Council Canada. Their responsibilities included developing the NRC Program for vehicle propulsion technologies, leading international collaborative membrane development programs, and developing anion exchange membranes for fuel cell and battery applications.

Since 2012, MacKinnon has been working as the Chief Scientist at Loop Energy Inc., a company specializing in fuel cell systems.

Sean MacKinnon completed a BSc in Chemistry at Carleton University between 1992 and 1997. Following this, they pursued further education and obtained a PhD in Chemistry from the same university, completing their doctoral studies between 1997 and 2001.
