Brandon Bates has a diverse work experience in the finance industry. Brandon is currently serving as the Head of Systematic Macro at Magnetar Capital since 2021. Prior to this, they worked as an Adjunct Professor of Finance at Brigham Young University Marriott School of Business starting from 2019. Brandon also held the position of Portfolio Manager and Quantitative Researcher at Squarepoint Capital during 2019-2020. Before that, they worked at BlackRock from 2012 to 2019, where they served as a Director, Portfolio Manager, and Quantitative Researcher. At BlackRock, their roles involved managing hedge fund portfolios, developing new quantitative investment strategies, and guiding multi-asset and volatility books. Brandon's career in finance started in 2007 when they worked as a Researcher at the National Bureau of Economic Research. During their time there, they focused on researching dynamic factor models and their application in forecasting macroeconomic conditions.

Brandon Bates earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Economics from Brigham Young University in 2006. Brandon then pursued a Master of Arts degree in Economics from Harvard University, completing it in 2010. Subsequently, they pursued a PhD in Financial Economics / Business Economics at Harvard University, which was completed in 2011.
