Monica Barney has worked in a variety of roles in the engineering and research fields. Monica began their career in 1996 as a Graduate Student Research Assistant at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. In 1999, they moved to Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory as a Graduate Student Research Employee. In 2005, Monica started working as a Research Engineer at Nitinol Devices & Components. From 2008 to 2021, they held positions at Chevron (Research and Development Engineer), Sandia National Laboratories (Postdoctoral Appointee), and the Department of Disability and Aging Services (Care Provider: In-Home Support). Currently, Monica is employed as an Operator Engineer at Mango Materials, a Materials Engineering Consultant at Panasonic Energy of North America, and a Molecular Biology Intern at CODA Biotherapeutics.

Monica Barney obtained a Biotechnology Work Certificate from City College of San Francisco. Monica then went on to receive a Ph.D. in Materials Science with a minor in Mechanics from the University of California, Berkeley. Before that, they earned an M.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from the same university. Finally, they completed their undergraduate studies at California State University, Fresno, where they obtained a B.S. in Chemistry with a minor in Physics.
