Lorri Smiley is an experienced specialist in the non-profit sector, currently serving as the Student Engagement and Awards Administrator at the Materials Research Society since December 2000. In this role, Lorri engages with the global scientific community to support various programs, including MRS Awards, MRS Women in Materials Science & Engineering, MRS University Chapters, and the MRS Meetings’ Career Fair. Previously, Lorri held the position of Sales Coordinator in the Advertising & Exhibits Department, managing career center events and pre-meeting marketing at bi-annual meetings. Lorri also served as the National Key Account Sales Manager at Emess Lighting from March 1993 to January 1999, overseeing key accounts and independent agencies for the company. Earlier experience includes serving as Assistant to the Executive Vice President at Reference Metals from January 1985 to February 1993. Lorri is an alumnus of Community College of Beaver County.
Materials Research Society
The Materials Research Society (MRS) is an international organization of almost 15,000 materials researchers from academia, industry and government, and a recognized leader in promoting the advancement of interdisciplinary materials research and technology to improve the quality of life. MRS was established in 1973 by a visionary group of scientists who shared the belief that their professional interests were broader in scope than existing single-discipline societies, and that a new interdisciplinary organization was needed. MRS sponsors two major annual Meetings offering approximately 95 topical symposia. The Society recognizes professional and technical excellence, conducts symposium tutorials, and encourages technical interaction among college students through University Chapters, and among materials professionals through regional Sections. Headquartered in Warrendale, Pennsylvania (USA), MRS membership now spans over 90 countries, with more than 46 percent of members residing outside the United States. In addition to its communications and publications portfolio, MRS organizes high-quality scientific meetings, attracting over 12,000 attendees annually and facilitating interactions among a wide range of experts from the cutting edge of the global materials community. MRS is also a recognized leader in education outreach and advocacy for scientific research.
