Harper Schmalz, B.Sc., B.I.T. has diverse work experience in various fields. They started their career at Wilfrid Laurier University as an Instructional Assistant for Plant Biology, where they provided guidance and support to students in plant biology laboratories. They also worked as an Instructional Assistant for Toxicology & Wetland Science. At Matrix Solutions Inc., they held the position of Junior Aquatic Scientist, where they were responsible for monitoring water quality and hydrology at wetland locations, conducting environmental protection order water sampling, and executing fish salvage and turbidity monitoring projects. They also monitored horizontal directional drilling of pipeline crossings and identified any environmental disturbances. Additionally, they identified hydrologic disturbances at mining sites, collected surface water and groundwater samples at environmental spill sites, and salvaged amphibians found within pipeline construction right-of-way. They performed fish habitat assessments to identify overwintering habitat and barriers to fish passage. At the City of Cambridge Ontario, Harper worked as an Instructor/Lifeguard and Head Lifeguard, and also served as a Sidewalk Inspection Student, where they performed condition assessments on the city's sidewalk network. They recorded defects using ArcCollector and Garmin GPS data. They also worked as an Assistant Swim Instructor. They have also worked as a Resource Technician at Land Care Niagara and as a Student Field Technician at the City of Barrie. Overall, Harper has gained valuable experience in various environmental and instructional roles.

Harper Schmalz holds a Bachelor's degree in Honours Applied Water Science from Wilfrid Laurier University, which was obtained from 2017 to 2021. Before attending Wilfrid Laurier University, Harper Schmalz studied Civil-Environmental Engineering Technology at Conestoga College from 2016 to 2017. In addition to their educational background, Harper Schmalz has obtained various certifications, including Electrofishing from the Natural Resources Training Group in February 2022, Ice Safety Awareness from Rocky Mountain Adventure Medicine Inc. in January 2022, ARGO Land Operator - Level 1 from the Canada Safety Council in December 2021, Swift Water Safety & Awareness (Rescuer 1) from Rocky Mountain Adventure Medicine Inc. in May 2021, Utility Vehicle Training from the Canada Safety Council in May 2021, Ontario Traffic Control - Book 7 from Construction Workplace Safety Training Ltd. in January 2020, Pleasure Craft Operator from the Ontario Ministry of Transportation in January 2019, Aquatic Supervisor Training from the Lifesaving Society Ontario in June 2017, and Standard – CPR / AED / First-Aid Certification Course from the Lifesaving Society Ontario in October 2019.
