SUMMARY:
The Laboratory Assistant I functions under the direction of the Laboratory Supervisor. The Laboratory Assistant II performs a variety of routine non-technical duties, performs waived laboratory testing, and assists technical Laboratory personnel. The Laboratory Assistant II is expected to provide excellent customer service and adhere to established Laboratory, MCH, and Code of Conduct policies and procedures at all times.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Primary Responsibilities
- Picks up specimens from physicians' offices.
- Communicates discrepancies or questions to the appropriate personnel to be resolved.
- Utilizes the Laboratory Information System to enter test orders, look up results, verify specimen receipt time and date, and check pending tests.
- Performs order entry verification.
- Follows Universal Precautions and other safety policies.
- Processes specimens appropriately and efficiently.
- Delivers processed specimens to appropriate Laboratory testing department.
- Packages and ship processed specimens to various reference laboratories.
- Answers incoming phone calls promptly and professionally.
- Orders and maintains adequate supplies in the Specimen Processing Department.
- Performs waived testing.
- Provides training to students, new employees, and fellow employees.
- Performs various clerical duties.
- Reviews Laboratory Department policies and procedures that pertain to his responsibilities at least annually.
- Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Other Duties / Responsibilities
- Participates in Annual Clinic Safety, Compliance, and Code of Conduct Training.
- Develops a working relationship with physicians, all Clinic personnel, and managers to ensure overall Clinic standards are met and good customer relations maintained.
- Familiarizes himself with all Clinic policies and procedures, including Safety and the Code of Conduct.
- May perform duties in other Clinic departments if qualified.
BACKGROUND REQUIREMENTS:
Education: High school diploma, GED, or equivalent required.
Experience: Specimen processing experience preferred.
Certification: N/A

- Must be able to type a minimum of 20 words per minute.
- Must be able to frequently use a computer and computer printer.
- Must have legible penmanship.
- Must be able to frequently move throughout the Clinic to pick up specimens or deliver reports.
- Must be able to occasionally remain in a stationary position.
- Must be able to occasionally move supplies and boxes weighing up to 20 pounds throughout the Clinic.
- Must be able to perform repetitive motions of various types and degrees utilizing the arms and hands.
- Must be able to occasionally position himself to maintain supplies and equipment, including under desks and counters.
