Carl Heltzel, Ph.D. has a diverse work experience spanning several organizations and roles. Carl is currently an Associate Professor and the Director of Research Development and Senior Science Writer at the Medical University of South Carolina, Hollings Cancer Center. Prior to this, they were the President of Heltzel Editorial, LLC, where they provided freelance writing and editing services to clients including the University of Michigan and Forbes Books. Carl also worked as a Senior Consultant at DBA Global Environmental Awareness Resources and Heltzel Editorial, LLC, where they conducted research, grant writing, and managed multiple projects simultaneously. In addition, they served as a Lecturer at Clemson University and the Chief Technical Officer at the National Institute for Hometown Security. Carl also held the position of Director of Chemical Operations and Senior Chemistry Consultant at the Environmental Risk Management Consulting Company and Corporate Environmental Risk Insurance Agency, and worked as the Editor of ChemMatters Magazine at the American Chemical Society. Early in their career, they served as the Monroe Moosnick Professor of Chemistry at Transylvania University, where they taught organic chemistry and secured external funding for various programs.
Carl Heltzel, Ph.D. received their Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Radford University. Carl then went on to earn their Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry with a focus on natural product drug discovery and synthesis from Virginia Tech. Following their doctoral studies, Dr. Heltzel pursued a two-year NSF Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, specializing in marine natural products and structure-activity relationships. In addition to their academic achievements, Dr. Heltzel has obtained certifications in various fields, including ethics training, chemical-terrorism vulnerability information, and hazard training for surface mining, coal mining, and construction industries.
