Jessal Patel

Senior Principal Scientist at Mestag Therapeutics

Jessal Patel has a wealth of experience in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors. Jessal began their career in 2005 as a Summer Research Student at Novartis, where they worked on testing compounds for stability and solubility. In 2006, they completed a one-year Pre-Registration Pharmacist placement with Pfizer Laboratories, working on a drug formulation project. In 2010, they completed a three-month BBSRC Policy Placement Internship with The Royal Society, where they assisted on writing policy documents on neuroscience and education. From 2011 to 2014, they were a Postdoctoral Scientist at Unilever/King's College London, where they investigated mechanistic pathways that may play a role in VSMC dysfunction. From 2015 to 2018, they were a British Heart Foundation Postdoctoral Researcher at the Royal Veterinary College, where they investigated extracellular nucleotides as potential inhibitors of vascular calcification. From 2018 to 2020, they were a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Hertfordshire. Most recently, they have been a Principal Scientist at UCB since 2020, where they have been based in the tissue remodeling group, focused on investigating novel anti-fibrotic therapies for kidney fibrosis. Her work has included development and optimization of bioanalytical assays, analysis of biorepository samples for biomarker discovery, and in vitro assay development for the study of novel actives on mitochondrial function. Jessal has also assisted in pipeline project management, and working with bioinformaticians, assisted in proteomic and transcriptomic data analysis. In 2021, they became a Principal Scientist at Mestag Therapeutics.

Jessal Patel obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Cell/Cellular and Molecular Biology from UCL between 2007 and 2011. Prior to that, they obtained a Pharmacy (MPharm) from King's College London between 2002 and 2006.
