Nicholas was commissioned into the Royal Green Jackets in 1965 and served on active service in Malaysia until joining the foreign department of the Financial Times. This was followed by a role as an investment broker at Grieveson Grant and Co, after which he joined the Hargreaves Group PLC where his last appointment was as Chief Executive of the International Energy Division. During this time, he undertook the Strategic Business Course at London Business School.
In 1987 Nicholas took over as CEO of Third Mile Investment PLC, a company in which his family had a substantial interest, and which he sold ten years later. In September 1997, Nicholas was appointed Private Secretary to HRH Prince Michael of Kent GCVO, based at Kensington Palace. He was appointed LVO by HM The Queen in the 2005, and CVO in the 2014 New Year’s Honours. Nicholas also served as a Magistrate for over 25 years
