Paul Esformes has over 10 years of experience in the legal and regulatory field. From 2006 to 2011, they were a student at Duke University, where they specialized in environmental, land-use, and regulatory law and policy. During this time they also served as a Graduate Research Assistant and Teaching Assistant. In 2007, they were a Graduate Intern in the Environmental Division of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs at the White House Office of Management and Budget. In 2008, they were a Graduate Research Assistant at the Duke Environmental Law and Policy Clinic. Paul also had Summer Associate roles at Williams Mullen and Morrison & Foerster LLP in 2008 and 2009, respectively. From 2011 to 2014, they were an Associate Attorney at Morrison & Foerster LLP, where they advised clients on compliance and enforcement of federal and state environmental laws and regulations. From 2014 to 2018, they were an Expert Analyst and Expert Regulatory Case Manager at Pacific Gas and Electric Company, where they developed company policies and executed strategies for renewable and clean energy issues. From 2018 to 2021, they were Senior Counsel and Head of US Regulatory Affairs at Ecoplexus Inc., where they managed nationwide regulatory matters and oversaw and directed 7 outside counsels and consultants. Paul is currently Deputy General Counsel & Compliance Officer and Senior Counsel at Modern Energy.
Paul Esformes completed their Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University between 1999 and 2003. Paul then went on to pursue a Master of Public Policy (MPP) at Duke University’s Terry Sanford School of Public Policy, which they completed in 2010. During this same time period, they also obtained their Juris Doctor (JD) from Duke University School of Law in 2010.
