Megan Bassett

Research Technician at Monterey Bay Aquariam Research Institute

Megan Bassett is a research technician in the video lab at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute. She received her M.S. in Applied Marine and Watershed Science at California State University, Monterey Bay. Her thesis focused on coupling underwater video imagery with high-resolution bathymetric maps to create habitat suitability models for Lingcod (Ophiodon elongatus). After graduating, Megan accepted a position with the Monterey Bay Regional Ocean Science Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program and the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program at CSU Monterey Bay. She worked with diverse groups of undergraduate students, helping prepare them for research experiences and eventual careers in ocean science. In 2017, Megan was selected as a MBARI summer intern, where she worked in the midwater ecology lab and helped describe a new species of pteropod. She was hired as a research technician following her summer internship and has been at MBARI since. In addition to analyzing deep-sea video, Megan helps run the summer internship program and other diversity and outreach initiatives at MBARI.
