Department: Lower and Upper School      

Employee Classification: Part-Time, Non-Exempt

Salary Range: $18.30-$21.00 per hour depending on qualifications and experience

Daily Schedule: Varies based on school need

Job Summary

Substitute Teachers at MAC play an integral role in supporting the classroom communities. They support Lead and Assistant Teachers by helping with daily routines, managing classroom tasks, and fostering a positive and engaging learning environment. Responsibilities include setting up the classroom each day, maintaining a tidy and organized space, and guiding students through the work cycle. Substitute Teachers may work with children across various age groups: Nido (Infant), Toddler, Primary (ages 3-6), as well as in our mixed-age elementary and middle school classrooms, ranging from 10 to 27 students.

Opportunities for summer substitute positions begin in early June.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Be on time and well-prepared to be present with the children each day.

  • Communicate clearly and accurately with children, conveying expectations and managing student behavior in a positive, respectful, and effective manner.

  • Help manage the classroom in such a manner that children are able to concentrate on their work, be competent in their practice, and have confidence in their abilities.

  • Involve and direct children as needed, after observation, and provide the opportunity for them to act independently.

  • Create an emotional climate in the classroom that is warm and comfortable and in which children feel safe and nurtured.

  • Assure the safety of each child on and off school grounds. Stay involved and vigilant during playground time.

  • Model appropriate and thoughtful behavior and respectful communication at all times. Grace and courtesy are essential components of the Montessori curriculum.

  • Assist in the implementation of the daily programming under the direction of the Lead and Assistant teachers.

  • Help to prepare and maintain an environment that is well organized, orderly, attractive, and aesthetically pleasing.

  • Ensure the classroom is clean and disinfected frequently.

  • Be sure classroom materials and supplies are replenished so that children may work independently.

  • Assist in establishing and maintaining a harmonious and joyful classroom.

  • Be able to engage in honest self-assessment and receive feedback from peers, supervisor, or Program Directors.

  • Maintain a professional and positive attitude while working and at all school related events.

  • Give and receive help from colleagues. Provide active, on-going support for all colleagues and demonstrate strong collaborative skills. Participate positively as a member of the classroom, program, and staff as a whole.

  • Be responsive, respectful, and supportive of parents at all times.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 and have one of the following: 

    • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
    • A 2-year college degree in child development or early childhood education from an accredited college or university or actively pursuing a degree
    • A current certification as a Child Development Associate (CDA) or Certified Childcare Professional (CCP) or another Department-approved credential
    • Qualify as a professional child care assistant through a combination of hours and verifiable experience in a professional child care setting
    • Experience working in a classroom setting
  • Professionalism, including attendance, positivity, and flexibility

  • Strong communication skills

  • High-energy and enthusiastic about working in a fast-paced, educational environment

  • CPR and First Aid certifications and Montessori knowledge or experience are a plus

  • Small group instruction experience required for Upper Division (1st-Middle School) substitutes

  • Criminal background check required upon hire

Part-time, temporary and substitute employees will also accrue PTO during the school year at a rate of 1 hour of PTO per every 30 hours actually worked.
