Markos Mylonakis

Markos Mylonakis has a diverse and extensive work experience in the technology and data engineering field. Markos currently holds the role of Director of Engineering at Monzo Bank, starting in September 2022. Previously, they worked at Meta as a Senior Data Engineering Manager at Instagram, where they led and scaled data engineering teams for Reels and Creators across London and the Bay Area. Markos also held the position of Senior Data Engineering Manager at Facebook Commerce, leading teams in London, Tel Aviv, New York, and Seattle to leverage data and make Facebook Shops a top e-commerce destination. Additionally, Markos served as a Senior Data Engineering Manager at Facebook Ads, supporting various Data Engineering teams in London contributing to Facebook Ads' core functions.

Before their time at Meta and Facebook, Markos worked at eBay as a Data Engineering Manager at Marktplaats, where they managed a team of data engineers. Markos was also a Lead Data Engineer and Senior Backend Developer at Marktplaats, focusing on leveraging data to connect buyers and sellers.

Prior to eBay, Markos worked at ING as a Data Scientist for International Advanced Analytics. Markos also founded and served as CEO of Lexiful B.V., a company that developed a cloud translation service using artificial intelligence and managed a software development team.

Earlier in their career, Markos worked as a Research Software Engineer at Xerox, managing the company's involvement in an international research project focused on machine translation technology. Markos also worked at Unisystems as a Senior Developer and IT Consultant in the financial sector, where they developed and maintained a letters of guarantee application and led a team that developed a clustered database and distributed system.

Markos began their career as a self-employed developer and IT consultant, working on various programming and web development projects. Markos also founded a Greek internet auction site and worked for a Norwegian shipping technology company.

In addition, Markos gained experience as an Informatics Instructor at the Municipality of Maroussi, teaching adults how to use Microsoft Office and the internet.

Throughout their career, Markos has demonstrated strong leadership skills, expertise in data engineering, and a passion for leveraging technology to drive business growth. Markos is adept at managing teams, developing data-driven strategies, and collaborating with cross-functional stakeholders.

Markos Mylonakis obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Physics from the National University of Athens, which they attended between 1997 and 2005. Following this, they pursued professional courses in Management and Software Engineering from various institutions from 1999 to 2016. In 2005, Markos enrolled at the University of Amsterdam for a Master's Degree in Artificial Intelligence and Natural Language Processing, which they completed in 2007. Markos continued their studies at the same university and earned a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Computer Science, specializing in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Translation, between 2007 and 2012.
