Tom Harman

Design Director at Monzo

Tom Harman has a diverse work experience spanning multiple industries and roles. Tom started their career as a Designer at Optix Solutions, where they designed and built websites for local businesses. Tom then worked as a Web Designer at Fake French, collaborating with an independent graphic designer to create websites for bands and music venues.

Tom joined Mint Digital as a Senior Designer, eventually becoming the Design Director. In this role, they were responsible for all aspects of design output, including leading user experience on client projects, developing internal workflows, and managing a team of designers across two continents.

Following their time at Mint, Tom co-founded Coastermatic, a company that allows users to print their Instagram photos on stone coasters. Tom served as the Design Lead and contributed to the company's growth.

Tom pursued independent consulting work under their own name, working with startups, technology companies, and consultancies to create and launch new digital products. Tom often took on a leadership role in these projects, collaborating with small teams.

Tom then joined Sum, where they led UI-facing projects that focused on using clinically relevant data to make users' health understandable and actionable. Tom worked closely with various departments to ensure effective collaboration and achieve the company's mission.

At BuzzFeed, Tom worked as the Product Design Manager, overseeing design for consumer-facing digital products across a range of platforms. Tom managed a team of designers and collaborated with design managers and other stakeholders to lead BuzzFeed's overall Product Design team.

Most recently, Tom joined Monzo Bank as the Design Director, leveraging their expertise in design leadership to contribute to the bank's user experience and product design.

Tom Harman began their education at The Romsey School from 1994 to 1999, where they achieved 12 GCSEs in various subjects. Tom then attended Brockenhurst College from 1999 to 2001, where they focused on 3 A-levels. Following this, Tom attended the University of Exeter from 2001 to 2004, earning a BSc degree in Computer Science. Later on, they enrolled at the School of Visual Arts from 2011 to 2013, pursuing an MFA in Interaction Design.
