Shirley M. Malcom

Dr. Shirley Malcom, a native of Birmingham, Alabama, received her bachelor’s degree with distinction in zoology from the University of Washington, Seattle, her master’s in zoology from UCLA, and her Ph.D. in ecology from the Pennsylvania State University. In addition, she holds 17 honorary degrees.

She serves as a trustee of Caltech, and as a member of the board of The Heinz Endowments, Public Agenda and Digital Promise Global. She is chair of the board of the National Math-Science Initiative (NMSI). Dr. Malcom is a former trustee of Carnegie Corporation of New York, former member of the National Science Board, and was a member of President Clinton’s Committee of Advisors on Science and Technology. She is a fellow of AAAS and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2003 Dr. Malcom received the Public Welfare Medal of the National Academy of Sciences, the highest award bestowed by the Academy.
