Cindy Carson is currently the People & Culture Advocate at Movemedical. Prior to their current position, they worked as a server and lead trainer at Karl Strauss Brewing Company from October 2011 to November 2019.
During their time at Karl Strauss, Cindy learned about Danny Meyer's philosophy of "Enlightened Hospitality." This philosophy had a big impact on her, and they took two key lessons from the experience.
The first is that there is a difference between service and hospitality: service is what you do TO your guests and hospitality is how you make them FEEL. Cindy learned that making guests feel valued is easy when you're genuinely invested in their happiness.
The second lesson is that emotional skills are often far more important than technical skills. Cindy learned that it's much harder to teach someone how to be friendly, empathetic, warm, self-aware, and intellectually curious than it is to teach them technical skills.
Cindy is grateful for the opportunity that Karl Strauss gave their to learn about enlightened hospitality. This experience has influenced their professional philosophy and made their a better server and trainer.
