Ngaire Elwood

Head, Cord Blood Advanced Therapies Research Laboratory, Stem Cell Medicine Theme at Murdoch Childrens Research Institute

Ngaire Elwood has extensive experience in the field of cord blood banking and stem cell research. Ngaire has served as the Director of BMDI Cord Blood Bank since 2007, overseeing the management and operations of one of the three public cord blood banks in Australia. Ngaire is also the Chair of the AusCord network of public cord blood banks since 2019. Ngaire is involved in various organizations related to cord blood and stem cell research, including serving as a Non-Executive Director of the Cord Blood Association and the National Stem Cell Foundation of Australia. Ngaire is also a Board Member of the ISCT, International Society for Cell & Gene Therapy. Additionally, Ngaire is actively involved in advocacy work and is the Board Chair of Australian Sickle Cell Advocacy Inc. Ngaire is a Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and Women on Boards. Ngaire has a strong academic background and holds positions as an Honorary Principal Fellow and Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne.

Ngaire Elwood has a Bachelor of Science with Honors in Pharmacology from the University of Melbourne, which was obtained from 1983 to 1986. Ngaire then pursued a Master of Science in Immunology at King's College London from 1988 to 1989. Later, they completed their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Medical Biology at the University of Melbourne from 1990 to 1994. Presently, they are engaged in the Women in Senior Leadership Program at the Melbourne Business School, starting in 2022.
