Chris Barr

Chief Technology Officer at NABU

Chris Barr is the current Chief Technology Officer at NABU. Prior to this, they were the Director of Arts + Technology at the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation from July 2012 to February 2021. In this role, they created initiatives within the Arts programs that focus on how technology can attract and engage arts audiences. Chris also led projects to support technologists working in museums and cultural institutions in Knight’s focus cities. Additionally, they managed a portfolio of more than $20m in arts & technology investments.

Before their time at the Knight Foundation, Chris Barr was an Assistant Professor, Design at West Virginia University from July 2009 to May 2012. There, they coordinated with area employers to develop new digitally-focused design curriculum reflecting the expectation of employers. Chris also designed courses that moved students beyond print layout through hands-on experience in front-end development, user experience, and design research. Chris fostered skills, talent, and confidence in students resulting in career design positions with international companies including LinkedIn and Audi.

Chris Barr’s first foray into technology development management was at Villanova University from May 2007 to July 2009.

Chris Barr has a MFA in Media Study from University at Buffalo and a BFA in Fine Art from West Virginia University.
