Emily Backes has extensive experience in the fields of law, justice, and policy, currently serving as the Deputy Board Director for the Committee on Law and Justice and the Board on Children, Youth, and Families at The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine since February 2011. Previous roles at the same organization include Associate Director, Senior Program Officer, Program Officer, Associate Program Officer, and Research Associate. Before joining The National Academies, Emily Backes worked as a Policy Intern at the Enough Project and as a Research Intern at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. Emily Backes holds a Doctor of Law (J.D.) from the University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law, a Master of Arts in History from the University of Missouri-Columbia, and a Bachelor of Arts in History and Political Science from the same institution.
