Joy MacFarland has extensive experience in the field of English language teaching and marketing. From 2004 to 2006, they worked as an ESL teacher at the American Language Academy. Joy then worked at ISOFOTON as an in-house translator and English specialist from 2004 to 2008. Following this, they co-founded and served as the Director of Studies at Mosaic International Institute from 2008 to 2012. From 2012 to 2015, they worked at Sprachcaffe/GEOS Languages Plus Boston as the Assistant Regional Academic Manager/Manager, and then as the Academic Coordinator. From 2015 to 2018, they held the position of Director of Outreach and Center Director at FLS International. Joy also served as the VP of Outreach at EnglishUSA from 2017 to 2019. Starting in 2016, they co-founded and served as the Conference Chair for the MATSOL Intensive English Program Conference until 2020. Since 2018, they have been working at National Geographic Learning ELT, first as the Marketing Manager for ELT US & Canada, and currently as the Head of Regional Marketing for the same region. In 2022, they joined Cengage Group as the Co-Head of House.
Joy MacFarland earned a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Spanish Language/Latin American Studies with a minor in French Language from American University, where they attended from 1998 to 2002. From 2002 to 2004, they pursued a Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree specializing in Secondary Education and Foreign Languages at Boston College. In 2003, they obtained additional certifications including TEFL from The Boston Language Institute and Massachusetts Teaching Certification from the Massachusetts Department of Education.
