Sarah Bourne currently serves as In-House Counsel at the National Oceanography Centre since January 2024. Prior to this, Sarah worked as a Senior Solicitor at EY Riverview Law from February 2019 to January 2024 and was employed as a Commercial and Data Protection Solicitor at Riverside from January 2016 to February 2019, providing daily advice on data protection legislation and contract procurement. Sarah's legal career began at Chester City Council as an Assistant Solicitor, focusing on contracts, commercial agreements, and local government law, after holding a role as Solicitor & Deputy Clerk at Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service, managing insurance and litigation functions. Sarah’s foundational legal training occurred during a Trainee Solicitor position at Cheshire County Council, encompassing various legal areas and earning recognition for contributions to environmental planning inquiries. Educationally, Sarah holds a Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences from Edge Hill University, a Law Conversion from the University of Lancashire, and completed the Legal Practice Course at The Manchester Metropolitan University.

The National Oceanography Centre is an independent self-governing organisation - a charitable company limited by guarantee. The NOC is funded by UK Research and Innovation to work on National Capability programmes, and manages on its behalf, the National Marine Equipment Pool - Europe’s largest fleet of autonomous and robotic vehicles, and two state of the art research ships RRS Discovery and RRS James Cook. The NOC has two sites, Southampton and Liverpool, and employs around 650 staff. We are co-located at both sites with leading UK Universities, giving us a unique position in UK marine research.
