Michael Mahaffey

EVP, Chief Strategy & Corporate Development Officer at Nationwide

Michael W. Mahaffey is Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer of Nationwide. In this role, Mike leads the development, communication and coordinated execution of enterprise, business unit and corporate function strategies to fulfill Nationwide’s mission and vision. This includes responsibility for competitive intelligence, macro-trends analysis, strategic planning, strategic initiatives and corporate governance to ensure aligned execution. In addition, Mike has responsibility for corporate development functions including mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures and strategic partnerships.

Mike joined Nationwide in 2005 and has served as associate vice president, vice president and senior vice president of enterprise risk and capital management functions. He was named chief risk officer in 2008, and chief strategy officer in 2014. Prior to joining Nationwide, Mike was a member of Deloitte Consulting's strategy and operations group where his practice areas included finance, strategy, operations, risk and capital management, and mergers and acquisitions. Prior to Deloitte, Mike held several positions in corporate finance and financial systems management.

Mike is chairman of the board of the Risk Institute at The Ohio State University. He is the founding chairman, governance committee chairman, and member of the Executive Committee of the North American Chief Risk Officer Council, a group of chief risk officers of the largest insurers in the United States, Canada, and Bermuda. Mike also serves on the board of trustees of the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) where he is a member of the Finance and Audit Committee.

Mike holds an MBA in finance and corporate strategy from the University of Michigan Ross School of Business, and a BBA in accounting from Pepperdine University.
