Pere Obrador

Principal R&d Engineer / Chief Technologist at Natural Machines

Pere Obrador's work experience begins in 1991 with their role as an R&D Engineer at DIMAT, where they designed a Power Line Carrier (PLC) high-speed modem. Pere then worked as a Visiting Scholar at the University of Southern California from 1994 to 1995. In 1995, they joined HP Laboratories as an R&D Software Engineer, focusing on image compression and developing imaging pipelines for large format printers. Pere later became a Project Manager and Research Scientist at HP Laboratories, managing the Photo Research Project and working on computational photography algorithms.

In 2008, Obrador joined Telefonica Innovation, first as a Research Scientist, focusing on multimedia analysis and understanding, particularly in automatic media selection and machine learning applied to aesthetics prediction. Pere then became an Open Innovation Program Manager, leading projects with industry leaders such as Nokia, LEGO, and ElBulliFoundation. Obrador also managed the Digital Food Lab in partnership with ElBulliFoundation, developing technologies for gastronomy creativity and the Bullipedia project. Pere also served as a Product Manager for the Appetit Project, overseeing a team of researchers, designers, software developers, and resident cooks.

Starting in 2015, Obrador worked as an Associate Professor at La Salle Campus Barcelona for the Master in Mobile Business program, and from 2018 onwards, as an Associate Professor at Universitat de Barcelona, teaching on ingredient networks applied to computational gastronomy and 3D food printing technologies.

In 2017, Obrador joined Natural Machines as the Chief Technologist, focusing on computer vision, 3D scanning, and object detection and classification using deep learning for personalized cosmetic masks printing.

Pere Obrador has a comprehensive education history. Pere earned their Telecommunication Engineer (BS+MS) degree in Electronics Engineering from Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in 1991. Later on, in 1994-1995, they pursued a Master's Degree in Image/Video processing and compression at the University of Southern California. In 2011, they successfully completed their Ph.D. in Signal Theory and Communications at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya.

Pere also engaged in executive education programs. In 2013, they undertook an Executive Education program in Open Innovation at Esade. Pere further enhanced their skillset by participating in two Executive Education programs at Universitas Telefonica—the first in Business and the second in Project Management—starting from 2011 and 2015 respectively. These programs have equipped Pere with a diversified academic background, combining technical expertise with essential business and innovation acumen.
