Ed Mullen

Director, Design at Nava

Ed Mullen is the Director of Design at Nava. Ed previously worked as a Strategist at 18F from February 2016 to December 2019.

At 18F, Mullen worked on a variety of projects to help improve the government's design, buying, and building of technology. Ed also worked to help 18F become a more effective and empathetic organization. Early on, they worked to redirect the tech hero narrative that grew out of the HealthCare.gov rescue towards a more positive posture towards partners. Later they worked informally to connect people working on safety net projects to share information, lessons learned, and build community. Having built this community, Mullen was able to cofound 18F’s Human Services Portfolio, a reorientation of our org structure around domain expertise which has become a model 18F is expanding. As a supervisor, Mullen tried to help newer teammates gain a foothold and navigate the shifting terrain of government work.

Some of Mullen's notable projects include assessing Medicaid oversight methods, The Eligibility APIs Initiative, AK Medicaid eligibility & enrollment system modernization, AK child welfare system modernization, fighter pilot flight training scheduling path analysis, automated litigation support path analysis, Disability Case Processing System technical Assessment, 10x Investigation: TTS’s role in the eligibility space, CA child welfare modernization, unaccompanied Alien Child Database modernization, and FEC.gov redesign.

Ed Mullen's educational career began with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Cleveland Institute of Art. Ed then pursued a Fine Arts degree at the Lacoste School of the Arts.

Their manager is Senongo Akpem, VP, Design & Research. They are on a team with Shaun Mosley - Designer/Researcher, Kelli Ho - Designer/Researcher, and Rutvi Gupta - Designer/Researcher. Some individuals on their team include Genevieve Gaudet - Director of Design, Sneha Pai - Senior Designer, and Stefanie Owens - Designer.
