James started their career as an Online Organizing Fundraising Manager for Obama for America. In this role, they managed online fundraising efforts for the Obama presidential campaign. After the election, they transitioned to working on the Presidential Inaugural Committee as a Digital Content Producer. In this role, they were responsible for creating and managing digital content for the inauguration of President Barack Obama.

In 2010, James joined the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau as a Content Strategist. James was responsible for building the agency's content strategy program from the ground up. James led a team of content strategists who worked with multidisciplinary design and development teams to conduct content audits and inventories, establish governance practices, and write and edit digital copy.

In 2015, James left the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to join Nava as a Senior Content Strategist. At Nava, they are responsible for developing and executing content strategies that support the company's mission and goals.

James Hupp completed their undergraduate degree at Northwestern University, where they studied philosophy and political science. James then went on to get a certification from the Scrum Alliance in Scrum Master.
