Gijsbert van Willigen

Gijsbert van Willigen has extensive experience in biosafety and environmental safety, currently serving as the Head of the Department of Safety & Environment and Coordinating Senior Advisor for CBRN Safety & Security at Leiden University Medical Center since 2002. Gijsbert has played pivotal roles as Biosafety Officer and Environmental Safety Officer, particularly focusing on genetically modified organisms and biological agents. Additionally, Gijsbert has held the position of Laser Safety Officer at LUMC and served as Chair of the Conference Program Working Group and Past-President of the European Biosafety Association from 2015 to 2018. Previous experience includes advising on the construction of a BSL3 facility at the Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu and working as a Radiation Safety Officer at UMC Utrecht. Gijsbert earned an MSc in Biology from Radboud University and has undertaken various training courses in safety management.
