Barrett Lyon

Co-Founder & Chief Architect at Netography

Lyon is the former founder and CTO of Defense.Net, a cloud-based DDoS mitigation network that was acquired by F5 Networks. Prior to Defense.Net, Lyon was Co-founder and CTO of BitGravity, a content delivery network (CDN) that was acquired by Tata Communications. Early in his career, Lyon was the founder and CTO of Prolexic Technologies where he created the first successfully managed service to defend enterprises from DDoS attacks, a company later acquired by Akamai. He most recently served as Head of Research and Development with Neustar Security Solutions.

His experience and success have led to collaboration with a majority of the tier-one and tier-two carriers in North America and Europe and at National Security Agencies in Europe and the U.S. to mitigate and track hundreds of DDoS attacks. He also served as a Senior Consultant for Network Presence, where he managed engineering teams responsible for the security of Fortune 100 Corporations. Lyon holds multiple technology patents and is also a pivotal subject in the best-selling cyber-security book, Fatal System Error which is based on his work at Prolexic and his focus on tracking cybercriminals.

Additionally, Lyon has been an active proponent in the advancement of the Internet. He is the creator of The Opte Project, a visual representation of the Internet, which is displayed in the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
