James Bono

Dr. James V. Bono is an Orthopedic Surgeon with 26 years of experience specializing in joint replacement and reconstructive surgery of the hip and knee at New England Baptist Hospital (NEBH). Dr. Bono is Vice Chair of Orthopedics at NEBH. In this role, he oversees medical education programs, enhances and expands research initiatives, leads quality improvement processes, and is director of the operating room. Dr. Bono also serves as Director of Education at NEBH and is Chairman of the Patient Care Assessment committee for quality control.

In addition to his work at NEBH, Dr. Bono is a design consultant for the Stryker Triathlon Total Knee Replacement System, also known as the GetAroundKnee™, and performs Mako Robotic Arm-Assisted surgery. He has also developed hip replacement software for Agfa HealthCare and Sectra Medical Systems, and developed a technique for capsular preserving hip replacement, a variation of the Direct Superior Approach. . Dr. Bono holds eleven joint replacement patents and is a member of the Knee Society.

Having been invited to lecture in 23 countries, Dr. Bono is a five-time recipient of the Golden Apple Award for teaching excellence, and the Marion Ropes Award given by the Arthritis Foundation. He has published four books, 13 book chapters, and over 100 peer reviewed journal articles, and has been included in Boston Magazine’s annual list of “Top Doctors” from 2010-2020.

Dr. Bono is a Clinical Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Tufts University and a member of the Quality and Patient Safety Division of the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Medicine. He joined New England Baptist Hospital in 1994 after completing a Hip and Knee Fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery, and was selected to be an American Orthopaedic Association North American Traveling Fellow in 1995. He earned his M.D. from Albany Medical College in Albany, NY in 1987.
