Alex Vargas

Alex Vargas has served as the Mayor of the City of Hawthorne since 2004, where leadership has emphasized economic recovery, infrastructure improvements, homelessness advocacy, and affordable housing, resulting in a significant increase in the city's cash fund balance. Prior experience includes roles as Councilman and Civil Service Commissioner for the same city. In academia, Alex has been a part-time professor of Physics at El Camino College and an educator for the incarcerated population through the New Opportunities Organization. Previous engineering positions include Environmental Test Engineer at L-3 Communications, Manufacturing Test Engineer at US Seismic Systems Inc., and Physics Engineer II at Raytheon Intelligence & Space. Alex holds a Master of Science and a Bachelor of Science in Physics from California State University, Long Beach and California State University-Dominguez Hills, respectively.
