Penny Sarchet has extensive work experience as a science journalist and editor. Penny began their career as a reporter for Research Fortnight and Research Europe magazines, where they covered science policy and research careers from October 2012 to August 2014. In March 2011, they started freelancing as a science journalist, writing news and features on biology, medicine, technology, physics, and careers for various publications including The Guardian, New Scientist, and BBC Focus. Penny's role at New Scientist started as a reporter in August 2014, and they later became the news editor/reporter, biomedical news editor, and deputy news editor & biomedical news editor. Penny quickly progressed to the role of News Editor in August 2018 and was recently promoted to the position of News & Digital Director in March 2022, where they are responsible for leading and managing the news team at New Scientist.
Penny Sarchet pursued their education at the University of Oxford. Penny began their academic journey in 2005 and completed their Bachelor of Arts (BA Hons) degree in Biological Sciences in 2008. Afterward, they continued their studies at the same institution, undertaking a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in Plant Genetics, which they successfully completed in 2012.
