James Joseph Smith has extensive experience in union administration and carpentry, currently serving as Union Activity Administrator for the New York City District Council of Carpenters since July 2009. In this role, Smith has been elected four times as a delegate, representing 20,000 members and overseeing the approval of over 100 collective bargaining agreements, impacting more than $1 billion in labor. As a Council Representative, Smith addressed inquiries from members and managed new member intake. Prior to this, Smith held supervisory positions across various carpentry companies in the Tri-State Area, leading teams in large-scale millwork installation projects. Smith completed an apprenticeship in cabinetmaking and millwork at Carpenter's Labor Technical College and graduated from Progress High School for Professional Careers.

The New York City District Council of Carpenters is a representative body comprised of nine individual Locals and 20,000 union members. The District Council functions as the voice for thousands of New York City's most dedicated and skilled Carpenters, Millwrights, Dockbuilders, Marine Divers, Core Drillers, Timbermen, Concrete Carpenters, Cabinetmakers, Floorcoverers and Industrial Workers.
